In A Pinch Pasta Salad Recipe
I'm sure this has happend to you....An afternoon get together turns into a "Why don't you stay for dinner?" or you are asked to bring something last minute to a gathering while the baby is having a meltdown because he needs a nap. Cook something? Go to the store? The thought of either makes you sweat but you say "Sure, no problem!"
This is my In A Pinch Pasta Salad Recipe for those occasions that just seem to pop up. Best of all its super cheap to make!
Cook 1/2 a package of your favourite pasta as per package directions. Drain and let cool slightly. Add 1/2 a bottle of your favourite italian salad dressing, whatever veggies you have in the fridge (I like onion and broccoli but whatever your preference) and two large palm fulls of parmesan cheese. Stir and refrigerate! Enjoy!
Do you have any in a pinch recipes or classics that you turn to all the time?

Extra Pocket Change: Earning $ Through Online Survey Sites: Web Perspectives
I was admittedly a little skeptical when I first started looking into online survey sites. I feared that they were all scams, out to steal my personal info and spam my inbox. There are, however, quite a number of online sites through which you can earn a bit of extra pocket change. Keep an eye out for more posts on this topic!
After much research and hours of reading online forum groups the very first site I joined was Web Perspectives. (SIDE NOTE: If you are already a member of Swagbucks then go to the Special Offers Tab>Radium One Tab> and sign up for Web Perspectives that way then you earn SB too!)
I joined at the beginning of June 2011 and must admit that it takes awhile to get the ball rolling (it was probably about 5 weeks from when I joined, started doing surveys, got credited for my surveys and then had enough points for a reward). However, I now cash out for paypal cash, airmiles or various other rewards about every 2-3 weeks. Surveys come to my email and I only do the ones that interest me the most (usually Consumer Goods surveys, they are my fav).

Where to fill up your car....
I remember when gas used to be just 48cents but that is sadly no longer the case. While I try to keep my driving to a minimum the reality is that my kids aren't old enough to push the car so occasionally I need to buy gasoline!
Depending on where you live there are always options for earning "extras" along with your gas purchase. If you fill up at Shell make sure you are an Airmiles member to earn 1 Airmile for every $25*see site for further info.
If you live locally then you know that Loblaws and Canadian Tire tend to have the best gas prices. The BEST bang for your buck is to look for the gas coupon for bonus Canadian Tire Money on the back of the weekly Canadian Tire flyer and then to fill up there. Dollar for dollar it is the best deal but Loblaws gas bar also has its perks. Receive a voucher for 2cents/litre that you can redeem inside the store to go towards your groceries. Have an expired voucher? Valumart downtown takes them regardless of the expiration date! Bonus!

January Round Up
As 2011 came to an end I shared with you some of my goals for the year ahead. It's hard to believe that the first month of 2012 has already flown by and I'm extremely pleased with how we began our year.
We've already saved OVER $100 through watching for sales, menu planning and using coupons! I also found that we shopped less this month, using up items in our stockpile and by sticking to our menu plan. This month I also tried to make several "double duty" meals, items that could be used for more than one meal. For example roasting a chicken for dinner one night then using the leftover chicken for a dish the following evening (I think it was chicken quesadillas..yum). I also made pasta this month and actually remembered to freeze the leftover sauce AND then use that sauce a couple of weeks later for another pasta dish. Yippee! I also dug our my slow cooker for the first time in ages and made THE best ribs which makes me more inspired to try out some more recipes. Last but not least my goal for January was to learn more about batch/freezer cooking and thanks to a batch cooking demo at the end of the month I have many more tips and tricks to put to use. Whew!
Ahead for February:

Ahead for February:
- To stock up on Amazon.ca gift cards through Swagbucks earnings so that I can order my Easter gifts for the boys at the end of the month. Also hoping to score some post-Valentine's day candy deals!
- To repurpose an item from around the house into something new (I have a great idea...stay tuned)
- To continue to use sales, coupons, etc. to save on groceries in conjunction with meal plans. Going to try really hard to come up with some fun lunches this month and put my new found batch/freezer cooking knowledge to the test.
- I am thrilled that I will be presenting at the next Kindermusik with Lisa McCann parent's night tentatively scheduled for Tuesday Februray 28th. Will be doing a Coupon 101 intro as well as coupon exchange.

Batch Cooking Parents Night
I was thrilled to get out and about last night to attend a batch cooking demo class hosted by Kindermusik with Lisa McCann. Last nights special guest was Amy G., with a background in culinary arts and a ton of knowledge to share I learned a lot about batch cooking, menu planning and what you can freeze. She also was kind enough to share some of her own recipes with us and I'm hoping that she will be a guest on Kawartha Bargains in the future to share some of those fabulous dishes with you! In the meantime here were some of my favourite top tips:
- Tape a piece of paper to the freezer door listing what you have frozen AND how to cook it that way if hubby dearest feels the urge to get dinner going (you never know) he will know what is in there and how to get it going
- Freeze soups, stews, chilis, etc in freezer bags and lay them flat in the freezer. This way you can stack them on top of each other to save space
- Ever open a can of tomato paste for a recipe that needs just 1 scoop? Instead of throwing out the rest freeze the leftovers in ice cube trays!
- Freeze extra smoothies in mason jars (leave some space at the top for expansion when freezing) and then take the jar out to defrost and you don't even need a new cup!
- Make your own frozen pizzas! You can even put them on a pizza tray and just cover and freeze!
- Freeze cookie dough in logs and then you can just slice and bake!
